The purpose of this tutorial is to show you how to use an AVI as a texture for purposes of making a TV. I will also show you how to add a nice glow from the TV screen. This tutorial was made by request.

First you will need to make a TV. If you don't have one made, you may use mine. tv.max (59k).

Now that you have your TV, let's begin.

  1. Go to the Material Editor.
  2. Choose the first sphere and and click the Type: button that says Standard.
  3. Choose Multi/Sub-Object from the list. Click OK.
  4. Under Basic Parameters set the number of Materials to 2.
  5. Make the first material the TV's texture and the second material the TV screen.

To do the screen.....

  1. Click the second material button.
  2. Go to the Maps section and click the None button next to Diffuse.
  3. Select Bitmap from the list. Click OK.
  4. Click the blank button that says "bitmap" to the left of it, and choose your pre-made AVI file. Click OK.

  1. Now select all the faces that are to be the TV screen.

  1. 16. This time change the Material: ID: to 2.

This may be all you need for your project but we will continue on to add a bit more to our scene. The glow and flicker of the screen!

  1. Make a Target Spot and line it up with the TV screen.

  1. If your screen isn't a perfect square or you used my TV you will need to adjust the aspect ratio (ASP:) of the Spot. With my TV it needs adjusting to about 1.25.

  1. Go to the Modify tab with the Spot selected. Click both Use check boxes under Near and Far in the Attenuation section.
  2. Adjust the End:Near: value so that the blue box is just out side the screen (just as above). The Start:Far: should be adjusted so that the yellow box is just ahead of the blue and the End:Far: (brown box) should be a bit more ahead of the yellow.

  1. You should also see under Spotlight Parameters and check box that's labeled Projector, put a check in it. Now click the button under it that's labeled Map:.
  2. Click the Scene radio button.

  1. Select the AVI you chose for your screens Diffuse Bitmap. Click OK.
  2. Click Instance and OK. This means any adjusting you do to the material will be effect the projection.

  1. Go to the Rendering menu and select Environment...

  1. Under Atmosphere click Add and choose Volume Light.
  2. Under Volume Light Parameters click the Pick Light button and choose your spot light. Then click OK.

Your DONE! You may want to adjust the density of the volume light or other properties to perfect the effect. But you should have something better than this...!!!
